PREN stands for Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number. It is a predictive measurement of a stainless steel’s resistance to localized pitting corrosion based on its chemical composition. In general, the higher the PREN value, the more resistant is the stainless steel to localized pitting corrosion by chloride.
Pitting corrosion is a type of corrosion that occurs when a small area of the surface of a metal is attacked by a corrosive environment, such as chloride ions. The attack is localized to a small area, which can lead to the formation of holes or pits in the metal.
