Stainless steel pipe sizes and wall thicknesses to ASME B36.19M (5S–80S) and ASME B36.10M (Sch 160 and XXS). Weights are theoretical, for austenitic stainless steel (304L/316L) at a density of 7.93 g/cm³. Although every effort has been made to give accurate information, PipeXtra Stainless Ltd accepts no responsibility for any errors.

How to read a stainless steel pipe size chart

Nominal bore (NB) and outside diameter (OD)

Pipe is ordered by its nominal bore (NB), also called nominal pipe size (NPS). The nominal size is a reference name, not a measurement: from 14″ upwards the NB matches the outside diameter in inches, but for smaller sizes it does not. For example, 2″ NB pipe has an outside diameter of 60.33 mm. The outside diameter stays the same for every schedule of a given size, so pipe and fittings line up.

Schedules and wall thickness

The schedule sets the wall thickness. The higher the schedule, the thicker the wall and the higher the pressure rating. Stainless steel schedules carry an “S” suffix (5S, 10S, 40S and 80S) under ASME B36.19M. Schedule 40S is the same as standard weight (STD) and 80S matches extra strong (XS) up to 10″.

How pipe weight is calculated

Theoretical weight in kg/m = (OD − wall) × wall × 0.02491, with both measurements in millimetres. The factor 0.02491 is based on a density of 7.93 g/cm³ for 304L and 316L stainless steel. For a quick answer on any size, use our free stainless steel pipe weight calculator.

Stainless steel pipe sizes: your questions answered

What are the standard stainless steel pipe sizes?

Stainless steel pipe is made in nominal sizes from ⅛″ to 30″ NB and beyond. The most common sizes run from ½″ to 12″ NB in schedules 10S, 40S and 80S. The chart above lists the outside diameter and wall thickness for each size and schedule.

What is the difference between NB and OD?

NB (nominal bore) is the name of the pipe size, while OD is the actual measured outside diameter. Up to 12″ they differ, for example 1″ NB has an OD of 33.40 mm. From 14″ upwards the NB equals the OD in inches.

What does Sch 40S mean?

Sch 40S is a wall-thickness schedule for stainless steel pipe under ASME B36.19M. It is equivalent to standard weight (STD) and is one of the most widely used schedules.

How much does stainless steel pipe weigh per metre?

It depends on the size and schedule. For example, 2″ Sch 40S stainless pipe weighs about 5.49 kg/m and 4″ Sch 40S about 16.24 kg/m. Use the chart or our pipe weight calculator for any other size.

Are 304L and 316L pipe the same size?

Yes. 304L and 316L pipe share the same outside diameters and wall thicknesses. 316L is very slightly denser, but the difference in weight is negligible for most purposes.
