Hollow bar is a thick-walled seamless tube made for machining. Starting from hollow bar rather than solid round bar means there is no bore to drill out, so you save machining time and waste less material.

A quick guide to stainless hollow bar

What is hollow bar used for?

Hollow bar is used to make round, machined parts with a hole through the middle, such as bushes, sleeves, rollers, spacers, couplings and hydraulic cylinder components. It is not a pressure pipe: for carrying liquids or gases, use pipe made to a pipe standard, such as our A312 seamless pipe.

304L, 316L or 1.4462 duplex?

304L suits general engineering and indoor use. 316L contains molybdenum for better resistance to chlorides and pitting, so it is the usual choice for marine, chemical and food applications. 1.4462 is a duplex stainless steel (often called 2205) with roughly twice the strength of 304L and 316L and better resistance to stress corrosion cracking.

Choosing a size

Pick an outside diameter slightly larger and a bore slightly smaller than your finished part, so there is material left to machine to size. If you are not sure, send us your finished dimensions and we will suggest the closest size from the chart.
